The customer
The British Institute of Radiology (BIR) is an international membership organisation for everyone working in imaging, radiation oncology and the underlying sciences.
The challenge
BIR identified challenges in attracting and retaining members. Feedback showed that the existing membership and learning platforms were not delivering the seamless, intuitive user experience expected by today’s professionals. To address this, BIR engaged GetSavi to conduct a strategic review of their digital ecosystem, define a high‑level roadmap for change and identify the investment required to modernise their systems and strengthen engagement across their global membership.
What needed to happen
BIR needed to understand how effectively its current systems were supporting members, operational teams and strategic priorities. Key challenges included:
- Membership and learning platforms not meeting modern user expectations
- Fragmented experiences affecting member acquisition and retention
- Limited clarity around supplier performance and system improvement potential
- A need for a structured roadmap aligned to BIR’s wider organisational strategy
- Uncertainty around the scale of investment and resourcing required
BIR required a clear, evidence‑based view of what needed to change and how to prepare the organisation for a multi‑year digital improvement journey
The approach
GetSavi delivered a structured, insight‑driven review to help BIR build clarity and confidence about the future:
- Technology ecosystem review: Assessed current systems, integrations and supplier relationships to understand gaps, risks and opportunities.
- Discovery workshops: Facilitated cross‑team workshops to identify system pain points, process challenges and user experience issues.
- Findings and recommendations: Produced a strategic set of findings and recommendations, validated through a Council strategy day.
- High‑level roadmap and investment options: Defined a practical roadmap for change, including investment requirements and budget estimates.
- Council engagement: Presented the roadmap to BIR Council to secure alignment and support for next steps.
The results
- A clear, actionable roadmap outlining priority system improvements and practical next steps
- Defined investment expectations and resourcing needs to support successful delivery
- A re‑energised approach to working with current suppliers on system upgrades
- Strong buy‑in for change across BIR Council, leadership and operational teams
Key takeaways:
- Technology change does not always require replacing every system — targeted improvements can deliver substantial value.
- Strategic technology planning is most powerful when aligned to a new or evolving corporate strategy.
- Engagement with senior leaders and Council members significantly increases buy‑in and confidence for change.
