Beyond AI features: what really makes an LMS work

Share:

Overview

Over the past 12 months, we’ve explored how AI is changing the LMS and LXP landscape. To name a few key advances, AI now offers:

  • Automated nudges and prompts to boost learner participation and completion.
  • AI-driven testing and validation during implementation.
  • Automated summaries of learner feedback, using built-in GenAI tools.

As a company that regularly supports clients through requirements analysis and vendor selection for LMS and LXP solutions, we see certain broader priorities for implementation that never go away – regardless of a platform’s AI features.

“Beyond AI requirements, we will also always major on these three critical parts of the LMS user journey.”

We’ve covered these in several webinars and continue to advise clients on each. A brief recap:

Single sign-on

Learners want an easy journey between your website and your LMS. We work closely with clients to map journeys that stay consistent with their other platforms while protecting access controls. It’s a small, easily overlooked part of implementation – but its importance can’t be underestimated.

Purchasing journeys

eCommerce for courses and learning assets raises a familiar debate: keep it on the website, or build a shopfront into the LMS? We’re agnostic on the answer, but the thinking must happen upfront – it shapes both your spend with your learning partner and the extra work needed with your website and CRM teams. The goal: easy navigation for learners, and accurate transactional data for Finance.

Integration goals

Every implementation raises questions about integration. With an LMS, the key is defining how much data needs to move between LMS and CRM – especially for CPD. Some organisations need only basic completion data; others need a fuller dataset, surfaced through an online account or CPD portal. Either way, define the data journey upfront. Beyond AI requirements, we will also always major on these three critical parts of the LMS user journey. AI for learning is a huge step forward for non-profits, yet it will never leave behind these three business-led considerations in how you offer your courses to your learning community.
